Overview

Bill Maxwell and James Paavala are the are the original amplified acoustic duo called Cowboy Angel Blue. The name is from a bootleg album of Bob Dylan’s called Cowboy Angel Blues. I believe it is also the title of a chapter in Bob Dylan’s book Tarantula. I liked the sound of the words together but it has been a rather tough sell to get people to remember the name. We formed on a cold February day in 2003 when we were both in Frank’s Bar in Virginia and Mary Gentilini, owner/manager asked if her two favorite guitar players/singers would play together some Friday night. About two weeks later we did and we have been together ever since. We have diverse influences but mainly hank, holly, dylan, young, haggard, cash, stones, springsteen, townes, earle, prine, to name a few. We now play as a trio with world class steel guitarist John Ely who also adds some high harmony vocals to the mix. Paul Tinjum occasionally joins us on bass and/or guitar for low end with Jimmy Laine on drums when a full band is requested.
