Land of the Loon: An Iron Range Tradition

Posted by RangeBuzz on June 17th 2009 in Ethnic Food, Iron Range Arts, Land of the Loon

Did you know Silver Lake is the home to the World's Largest Floating Loon?

One of my favorite summer events to hit Virginia, Minnesota, is the famous Land of the Loon Festival. Like many Rangers, I see the Land of the Loon as the official beginning of fun and celebration of summer. The festival kicks off Saturday morning with an extravagant parade that travels down 5th Avenue and Chestnut Street. Then the “Loonies” race to Olcott Park to indulge in a HUGE spread of ethnic foods-Gyros, Italian Sausages and Becky’s Egg Rolls-and to taste the most delicious desserts: sno-cones, cotton candy, funnel cakes and the famous mini-donuts (my son refuses to quit asking, “Can we get mini-donuts? Can we? Can we, Mom?”). The children, with their sticky faces and fingers, gather with their parents near the gazebo to dance and sing with the various entertainers. Talented artists and crafters share the park to sell their unique and beautiful creations year after year. After a day at the park, the nightlife fires up downtown at the Land of the Loon Street Dance; the roads are blocked and people party hearty while they dance in the streets and enjoy more food, drink and entertainment. With smiles and full bellies, Rangers can’t get enough. Most return on Sunday just to do it all over again. Rain or shine, everyone shows up.

Rangebuzz.com fans, let me give you a little inside information about what’s going down at this year’s Land of the Loon Festival. I’ll start with the food (since it’s my FAVORITE part). There’s absolutely no way I can walk by the Gyro stand and not get one. Last year, after standing in line for 20 minutes (it was worth it) my husband says, “Can I have a bite. ” “Ah…NO! Get your own!” was my response. I’m normally a sharing person, I am! But I just love every single bite. That’s not the only tasty treat at the Land of the Loon. I’m talking about the best Italian Sausages ever served up by the Italian American Club (these are my father’s favorites). The Virginia Lion’s Club always serves sarmas, turkey legs and Ukrainian sausage. There’s Pepe’s Mexican food, there are cheese curds, blooming onions, pita sandwiches, corn on the cob, BBQ ribs-the list goes on and on.

Later that evening, I always hit the LOTL Street Dance. There is one stop that’s automatic: I gotta get me some of Barb’s Fried Bread and a Becky’s Egg Roll or I’m not happy. And hundreds of other people share this vow, I’m sure. (I’ve been dieting all week just to gear up for this weekend!) But even better than stuffing my face, I look forward to hearing some great music. Four Horse Johnson and Livin’ Large will be rocking Chestnut Avenue this year. Downtown will certainly really rocking with good tunes, great people, food and drinks.

There’s something for everyone at the Land of the Loon. Here’s the link to the Land of the Loon web site for more information. www.landoftheloonfestival.com Get out there and enjoy! The Land of the Loon only comes once per year.

Snicker’s Pizza and Pub Has Chisholm Fired Up!

Posted by RangeBuzz on September 5th 2008 in Bar & Grill, Burgers, Pizza, Snicker's Pizza & Pub

If you’re in Chisholm to experience some Fired Days fun, you may want to stop over and check out Chisholm’s newest pizza shop: Snicker’s Pizza and Pub.  Originating as one of Eveleth’s favorite places for pizza, burgers and sandwiches, Snicker’s now has a location in downtown Chisholm and so far-they’re really hoppin’.

Snicker’s rocks the ‘bar food’, ‘appetizers’ and ‘pizza’ category.  Their prices won’t break your pocketbook either. The menu is extensive from shrimp to battered broccoli, burgers to Phillies, garlic, buffalo and oyster wings to waffle fries, and so on.  They serve all the classic pizzas; however, if you’re tired of the same old same old, Snicker’s clever pizza creations satisfy the craving for ‘something different.’ Try their Steak & Pepper Cheese or Chicken Bacon Ranch or Gyro pizzas for a tasty twist.

Wastin’ Away Wednesdays

Posted by RangeBuzz on August 12th 2008 in Bar & Grill, Goodfella's Bar & The Grille, Karaoke, Nightlife

I love hump day. I find myself starting a count down (2 days, 9 hours, 30 minutes and 45 seconds) until the weekend. In my mind, two and some days is a long time to wait to let loose a little. So, I take full advantage of ‘Wastin’ Away Wednesdays’ at Goodfella’s in Eveleth with Backwoods Karaoke. Oh boy, people-this is a fun night.

Amigos, the Mexican food deals on Wednesdays are a STEAL-the quesadillas, Nachos Grande, tacos and more for only $3. Add a buck for chicken in the quesadillas. And I’ll tell you this: they don’t pull any half-the meat, cheapo portions crap. Everything is generous and delicious in my opinion.

But, even more importantly after three whole days of work, the MARGARITAS are only $3, too! Occasionally, I like to close my eyes, take a sip of my Margarita, and pretend that I’m on some island in the Bahamas (without the kids). Ahhh…

North Gate Tastes Great

Posted by RangeBuzz on August 12th 2008 in Burgers, Ethnic Food, Northgate Cafe

Before I started RangeBuzz.com, there were some restaurants I just hadn’t tried. Fortunately, I’ve broadened my horizons and have had experienced some of the best food around at North Gate Café & Catering. My only disappointment is that I wish I had eaten there years ago!

When I first looked at the menu, I was impressed at the original recipes for breakfast (my favorite meal of the day.) With omelets like Papa’s Secret-wild rice, green pepper, onion, mushrooms and American cheese, Brother’s Belly Buster-ham and bacon with 3 cheeses and sour cream, the Cully Looper-stuffed with corned beef hash, and Grandpa’s Grub-wild rice, bacon, mushrooms and cheddar cheese, you can see how the decision was not easy. I decided on Grandpa’s Grub and my husband ordered the Cully Looper. The portions were plentiful and the omelets tasted great! Our omelets were packed with fresh ingredients. I couldn’t even finish my meal because I was so full. The next time I’m in for breakfast at North Gate Café, I am tempted to try the Stuffed Hashed Browns. I’ve heard they are a customer favorite.

Pasties, Porketta, Sarmas and Sandwich Loaf: Only on the Iron Range

Posted by RangeBuzz on August 12th 2008 in Ethnic Food, Iron Range Restaurants, Mary's Morsels, Northgate Cafe

As many know, I’ve lived on the Iron Range my entire life (except the couple years I lived in Duluth while I attended college). However, from time to time I travel outside the area, and I’ve eaten at many, MANY restaurants. But there’s one thing that I sometimes take for granted, and that’s really good, authentic Iron Range cuisine. What’s so special about Iron Range cuisine, you ask? If you’re a true Ranger, you know exactly what I’m talking about. But if you exist elsewhere, then let me fill you in on some great tasting meals  that you cannot enjoy anywhere but HERE.

Without coffee every day, my life simply wouldn’t be the same. In fact, just about every night I get ready for bed, I think about how I can’t wait to wake up and smell the aroma of fresh brewed breakfast blend. After one sip, my senses perk up and the day begins with a smile. Call it an addiction if you will, I don’t care. It’s true that I’m hooked on the zip I get from my favorite beverage. Let me tell you about some of the best places to grab a cup of Joe on the Iron Range

Treat Your Sweet Tooth at Taconite Brew and Bakery

Posted by admin on June 12th 2008 in Bakery, Taconite Brew and Bakery

The other day I had the pleasure of tasting some delicious treats at the Taconite Brew & Bakery in Aurora, MN. Taconite Brew & Bakery opened in September of 2007, and has grown to be a popular stop for a home-style lunch or espresso and a sweet treat! Owners Bill and Cheryl Cadwell grew up in Aurora back in the 70’s and are pleased to live back in their home town.

So, what’s in the oven? Specialties include Finnish Rye bread, Sourdough bread-made from scratch-and their famous Paradise cookies-a special recipe made with craisins, raisins, and raisin bran cereal. Cheryl first tried a similar cookie at Paradise Bakery in Florida and then came up with her own version. Traditional rolls, danish cake donuts (an original recipe) and filled donuts are baked fresh daily. Every day offers a new variety of temptations. Saturdays are Pie Making days-fresh fruit pies-blueberry, apple and traditional pumpkin, pecan and lemon meringue.

Oh Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Posted by RangeBuzz on January 12th 2008 in BG's Bar & Grill, Iron Range Restaurants, Mary's Morsels, Natural Harvest Food Coffe Bar and Deli, Soups

On cold, below zero winter days, there’s nothing like a hot bowl of hearty soup to warm you up from the inside out. Most restaurants and delis offer a soup du jour, but there are a few special places that stir the pot with some original and healthy soup recipes. When you grow just a little tired of ‘chicken noodle’ and want to try something a different, check out some of these tasty soups made from scratch.

Poor Gary’s Cheeseburgers Rock!

Posted by RangeBuzz on August 12th 2007 in Burgers, Iron Range Restaurants

Ok. I admit it. I LOVE cheeseburgers and French fries. They are my absolute FAVORITE sinful indulgence in the whole wide world. I define sinful as anything I have to feel guilty about. I only have a few of these “sinful indulgences” left in me, and I won’t tell you them all. But, I will go on to tell you about a darn good (and I mean DARN GOOD!) cheeseburger from Poor Gary’s Pizza in Virginia MN.
